Description

Vank Cathedral (more properly Holy Saviour Cathedral or Church of the Saintly Sisters) is the largest Christian Church (Armenian denomination) in Iran. Built in the mid 17th century by the Armenian community which was resettled in Esfahan (اصفهان) by Shah Abbas Safavid Dynasty, it is covered entirely in frescoes on the inside.

This painting shows Christ at the Last Judgement at the top, whilst the Archangel Gabriel (not Michael, as it would be in Catholicism) holds the scales of justice and tramples a devil. One devil and one angel hold the books which contain the deeds of the mortals who are being sorted into the blessed being led to Heaven, and the damned who are being cast into Hell, where gruesome things happen to them.

Location: Esfahan (اصفهان), New Julfa district (نو جلفا), Iran.

I know this is probably not a very original comment but, like others, I was surprised to find such frescoes in Iran. I was aware that there are some Armenian churches in Iran (like the monastery St. Thadeus- a UNESCO site) but I would have assumed that they were all striped of their figural decoration. Well, I must have been ignorant - great shot - it captures the colours very well! Thank you for sharing - I have learned new things after visiting your gallery again!
