The Nennig Mosaic (from Nennig in Germany, near to the Moselle River and the important Roman city of Augusta Treverorum - Trier) is one of the most famous showing gladiatorial combat and venationes (animal hunts). It was part of a rich villa, and dates to the 2nd or 3rd century,and measures overall 160m².
On this pannel, the end of a combat between a lion and what remains of a wild ass. Not that that ever was a fair match. The lion seems to be nice enough with his handler, though, but somewhat sick. Maybe the donkey was off.
