Oxford Divinity School Ceiling

The marvellous gothic ceiling of Oxford's medieval Divinity School. Theology would be taught here, largely through disputations (two students who face each other from opposing pulpits and discuss a theological question). William Orchard was responsible for the ceiling in the 1480s, and the coats of arms of people who contributed financially still recall these benefactors. Other images, set in pendants and central and peripheral keystones represent biblical scenes (Samson, Evangelists), Christian symbols (Agnus Dei), lettering, and more random scenes (Fox and Goose). Above the Divinity School lies Duke Humfrey's Library, one of the oldest continously used libraries in the United Kingdom.
