Description

The Church of the Transfiguration of Kozlyatyevo (Церковь Преображения Господня из Козлятьево; Tserkov Preobrazheniya Gospodnya iz Kozlyatyevo) is the centre-piece of the Suzdal Museum of Wooden Architecture. It was built in 1756 in Kozlyatyevo, a village about equidistant from Vladimir and Moscow, and was moved to Suzdal (Суздаль) in 1965. The church was damaged in 2011 when lughting hit the spire and a fire broke out, but fortunately, Russia still has artisans and craftsmen who knew their trade and the church was repaired.

The church is a grand example of the wooden architecture of Tsarist Russia; not as famous as the Kizhi monuments, but still quite a sight to see. The domes are covered with aspenwood shingles, which takes on a silver coulour when exposed to the elements. The rest of the church is built from pinewood; it is said that no other tool but an axe was used in the construction. The church is built entirely of wood: there are no metal nails used in this structure.
